HONORING THE YOUNGSTER (draft #1)

As we all know, November is National Children's Month in the Philippines. Children and young people have the same general human rights as adults and also specific rights that recognize their special needs. The month-long celebration aims to give Filipino children access to a healthy environment and a good education. As a third-world country, most families struggle financially, and it's the children who suffer the most. This month highlights the ways we can help and support them.

Children are neither the property of their parents nor are they helpless objects of charity. National Children’s Month which aims to help people realize children’s rights as individuals and allow children to have access to healthcare, education, and a healthy environment. Beyond a doubt, child rights are human rights that also recognize the special needs for care and protection of minors or children and young people under the age of 18. All children have these rights, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, or cultural background.

No child should be treated unfairly on any basis. Children’s rights include the right to health, education, family life, play and recreation, an adequate standard of living, and to be protected from abuse and harm. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), and National Youth Commission (NYC) are spearheading the celebration of National Children’s Month. This year’s celebration marks the 30th NCM celebration which focuses on the mental health and well-being of children with the theme: “Kalusugan, Kaisipan, at Kapakanan ng Bawat Bata Ating Tutukan!”

It is only fitting that we support the celebration which aims to raise public awareness of the initiatives that address the mental health needs of Filipino children and to disseminate accurate information to combat the negative stereotypes about mental health. They are human beings and are the subject of their own rights. This celebration is important to recognize children as the most valuable assets of the nation and to emphasize the importance of their role within the Filipino family and the Philippine society. It is important to keep the children healthy and well-nourished so they may be able to adapt and recover from the effects of the COVID-19 and prevent the worsening of the nutrition situation. Despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic, the NNC-NCR urges LGUs, and other stakeholders to work together in implementing and sustaining nutrition-related interventions for children and their families to safeguard their health and nutritional well-being.
